Reading Group: Myth

January 17 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This will be the first of Philosophy Society’s reading groups. For this session, we’ll be reading Chiara Bottici’s essay ‘Myth’, published on the online, open access journalĀ Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon.

As with all texts published on this site, ‘Myth’ serves as a critical introduction to the role mythology and mythological thinking plays within philosophical and political thought. Drawing on a wealth of examples and her own original research, Bottici presents a compelling account as to why we are unable to fully do away with the concept of political myth, why this might not be a bad thing and how political myths can be used (for better or worse) to shape politics.

The text can be found here.

Bottici is an associate professor of philosophy at the New School for Social Research and has published numerous texts in both English and her native Italian. Her academic profile can be found here.

As per usual, all are welcome – but please do read the text in advance if you can as this will help to create the most engaging discussion. Bonus points are available if you bring a copy with you (though these are unfortunately not legal tender).

Please contact the Academic Officer if you require more information.
